Hospitality Management is formed by the combination of two words- Hospitality and Management. While hospitality means generous reception of the guests, management means managing the whole activity. So, in simple language hospitality management means learning the art and skill of taking care of guests, patrons, and visitors. Obviously, it is on a big level and hospitality is an industry in its own.
The job scope pertinent to this sector is quite wide and voluminous. After completing a hospitality degree, the students can work on various job profiles in various departments. The hospitality industry can be classified in the following four broad categories:
Travel & Tourism: Travel and tourism industry, a very promising sector which has been on the rise in recent years. It includes all the works and functions of travel and tours.
Lodging and Accommodation: To simplify a bit, let’s just say that this sector involves hotels. Yes, the hotel industry is a part of hospitality.
Recreational/entertainment sector: There are many parks, centers and places which are dedicated to only recreation and entertainment. For example, movie cinemas, amusement parks, etc.
Food & Beverage: As the name suggests, Food and beverage sector involves all those related to the preparation of food, catering services, etc.
Now answering the other part- Is it the career for you?
If you are a good and fluent communicator and have high patience levels, you can work in this department. Besides being fluent and patient, you need to be very hardworking as it is not the field of a 9-to-5 job. If you are comfortable in leaving your home and traveling around along with the foretold characteristics, then definitely, it is the career for you.
